INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY

Radiology interventional methods, interventional neuroradiology, interventional radiology jobs

A radiologist is a doctor who does the diagnosis of diseases with the help of a CT scan or x ray. Some radiologists specialize in Interventional Radiology. This Interventional Radiology helps in diagnosis and treatment of the patient. The Interventional Radiologist uses special instruments or tools such as catheters, or wires. They insert these inside the body to reach the affected site using CT Scanners, MRI Scanners, ultra sound scanners. The wire has a camera attached to it which is viewed either directly or sometimes seen in the monitor. Suppose they find a foreign body inside the body they will remove it with the help of another special instrument. Hence, surgery can be done without cutting the body, but can through only one small hole. This reduces hospitalization of the patient some times they are done as day cases.
The Interventional Radiologist is a doctor who does Radiology study for four years, in the Medical School .After completion he becomes eligible to take the Board Examination given by the American Board of Radiology . Once the board exam is over he takes up training in Interventional Radiology and then finally becomes an Interventional radiologist. They get jobs easily in community hospital .They work with other physicians and solve the problems of the patients without surgery.
After becoming a full fledged Interventional Radiologist they will be ready to do angiography, embolization, gastrostomy tubes, intravascular ultrasound, stent placement, foreign body extraction, needle biopsy, blood clot filters, injection of clot lysing agents,
Catheters insertion and cancer treatment.
Angiography is done to a heart patient with angina. He might have some blocks in the arteries which are detected with the help of angiography .They inject a dye and with the help of the wire inserted they detect the arteries that are blocked in the monitor attached to it. Sometimes if there is critical block they will be taken for Bypass surgery otherwise a stent is inserted and inflated which opens up the vessel. This process is called angioplasty,
When insertion of a substance is done through a catheter into a blood vessel to stop hemorrhaging or excessive bleeding, it is Embolisation. Gastrostomy tubes are inserted into the stomach if the patient is unable to take food by mouth.
To find the problems inside the blood vessel intravascular ultra sound is used. It gives a clear vision of the interior of the vessel.
Any foreign body inside the body can be detected and taken out using a catheter. In the case of cancer patients a needle is inserted in the affected area and a tissue biopsy it taken without surgery. The invention of Interventional Radiology has given the Medical field a change in the way of treatment; soon the use of knife may be stopped.
