Sonography needs a lot of self confidence and ability to solve problems.
It does not involve just taking pictures, it involves knowing how to look
at the organs and then get the images needed. The Sonographers should have
a dedicated mind to spend most part of their days inside their labs. They
have to understand the anatomy, pathology and decide which picture has to
be taken. Each patient will be different so has to be patient and interpret
the pictures taken and then take the next one. They sometimes have to deal
with breast examination or vascular, or abdomen scans, OB GYN work. Other
times they do renal Doppler to look into the artery that supplies blood
to the kidney.
Some parts are very hard to see, such as the pancreas. Locating the organ
itself is difficult, and then they have to determine how the vasculature
is connected. After the operation they have to make sure the vascular system
is working alright.
Sonography uses sound waves .Many see it in black and white. The Doppler
system is in color and can show motion in the body. The screen is split
to see the picture in various
angles. By looking at the signals we can see how much blood is flowing through
an artery.
The sonographer apart from doing their job will have to treat the cancer
patients psychologically by giving them hopes that they are better. They
should learn to control their emotions in front of the patients. Some patients
will be eager and keep questioning. Then the Sonographer quietens him saying
I will tell after finish taking all the pictures.
It is a challenging job and needs good training since the interpretation
is very important. Anyone can see the pictures but only trained Sonographers
can interpret the pictures correctly. The patients are advised to go to
a best Sonographer , see how many years experience he has in the particular
field and then decide to go. Studying theory alone is not enough. The Sonographer
should be well versed in anatomy and physiology, then only they can interpret
the pictures.
The Sonographer helps in diagnosis as well as treatment of cancer and heart
patients. For heart patients they do angioplasty to remove blocks by putting
stents in the blocks and then blowing it like a balloon, In case of cancer
patients they give radiation therapy to reduce their pain and tumor. Sometimes
they reduce the size of the tumor so that the surgeon can remove it easily.
The Sonographers are a gift to the medical field. They help the doctors
in many ways to diagnose many diseases and also in the treatment. Thanks
