Radiographer is a doctor who specializes in Radiography which consists of two types diagnostic and therapeutic. For both one needs a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. The Radiology Specialist needs to do first the basic medical qualification. Then he has to specialize in any one of the following, radiology technicians, radiology technologists, and radiologists. Each of them is unique and need different set of learning and training. Although they study for four years, to become a well versed radiologist one has to have at least eight years of training and MD certification is a must. Apart from this the alternative choice is one year certifications programs, two years associate degree programs and some bachelor’s degree programs can also give the qualification. If one decides to become a lecturer in radiology then he needs to take the minimum bachelor’s degree and if he wants he can take another masters’ degree.
The Diagnostic Radiographer is the doctor who helps to diagnose the patient’s disease. When a person meets accident and taken to the hospital he will be first sent to a Diagnostic Radiographer who will take the diagnostic tests like X-Ray or CT Scan, or Fluoroscopy, MRI or ultra sound as recommended by the physician who first sees the patient according to the injury. Then with the result given by the radiologist the Specialist decides on a diagnosis of the disease and then give the necessary treatment.
Therapeutic Radiology deals with cancer patients both in diagnosis and treatment. Biopsy is done by inserting a tube in the affected area and taking a part of the affected area for testing. Once diagnosed the cancer patients can be treated with drugs, some with surgery. Some others respond well to precisely targeted doses of radiation. Sometimes the radiographer shrinks the tumors so that the surgeons can easily remover the tumor.
Thus the radiographer plays an important role in the case of cancer patients. They help in the diagnosis and the treatment and the follow up
The Radiologists have been of great help to all the Specialists in diagnosing the diseases of the patients. In olden days clinical and symptomatic examination was the system followed in diagnosis but now with the invention of these radiological instruments and the efficient radiologists available medicine has advanced to a very high level. More and more students are opting to go to this field since they all feel the future lies in this department. As in the future no treatment will be started before the patient goes through the diagnostic procedures first.
Radiologists are a gift given to the medical field by God. Patients are benefiting a lot with the invention of Radiological instruments. It penetrates our body and finds even minute health problems
