Radiographer is a doctor who specializes in Radiography which consists of
two types diagnostic and therapeutic. For both one needs a thorough knowledge
of anatomy, physiology and pathology. The Radiology Specialist needs to
do first the basic medical qualification. Then he has to specialize in any
one of the following, radiology technicians, radiology technologists, and
radiologists. Each of them is unique and need different set of learning
and training. Although they study for four years, to become a well versed
radiologist one has to have at least eight years of training and MD certification
is a must. Apart from this the alternative choice is one year certifications
programs, two years associate degree programs and some bachelor’s degree
programs can also give the qualification. If one decides to become a lecturer
in radiology then he needs to take the minimum bachelor’s degree and if
he wants he can take another masters’ degree.
The Diagnostic Radiographer is the doctor who helps to diagnose the patient’s
disease. When a person meets accident and taken to the hospital he will
be first sent to a Diagnostic Radiographer who will take the diagnostic
tests like X-Ray or CT Scan, or Fluoroscopy, MRI or ultra sound as recommended
by the physician who first sees the patient according to the injury. Then
with the result given by the radiologist the Specialist decides on a diagnosis
of the disease and then give the necessary treatment.
Therapeutic Radiology deals with cancer patients both in diagnosis and treatment.
Biopsy is done by inserting a tube in the affected area and taking a part
of the affected area for testing. Once diagnosed the cancer patients can
be treated with drugs, some with surgery. Some others respond well to precisely
targeted doses of radiation. Sometimes the radiographer shrinks the tumors
so that the surgeons can easily remover the tumor.
Thus the radiographer plays an important role in the case of cancer patients.
They help in the diagnosis and the treatment and the follow up
The Radiologists have been of great help to all the Specialists in diagnosing
the diseases of the patients. In olden days clinical and symptomatic examination
was the system followed in diagnosis but now with the invention of these
radiological instruments and the efficient radiologists available medicine
has advanced to a very high level. More and more students are opting to
go to this field since they all feel the future lies in this department.
As in the future no treatment will be started before the patient goes through
the diagnostic procedures first.
Radiologists are a gift given to the medical field by God. Patients are
benefiting a lot with the invention of Radiological instruments. It penetrates
our body and finds even minute health problems
